We (Kristen and Jesse) have been making mosaics using ceramic tile, stained glass, and found objects since 2021. In fact, the name 'broken dreams' was originally a tongue-in-cheek reference to our broken tile mosaic art.
Many of our pieces are created atop the surface of reclaimed furniture-- tables, dressers, and so forth -- while some of our pieces are wall-hanging.
General Info
Each mosaic project is unique and, as such, presents its own set of unique challenges, idiosyncrasies, and details which will factor into the time it will take, how much it will cost, and whether it’s even possible for us to fulfill.
In general, we can make more detailed images with glass than with tile. This is in part because we can easily buy most colors of stained glass right here in Portland, on demand. Colorful tile isn’t as easy to obtain, and often needs to be ordered in bulk which means we can’t order it on demand.
Tiles are better for patternwork, but can also be broken and arranged to make less-detailed imagery. We have a large selection of reclaimed tiles that we’ve collected over the years, and obtaining new tile is generally subject to the whims and movements of various tile sources.
We can make mosaics for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor mosaics cannot be mounted on anything that will warp with the weather, such as wood.
Pricing
Each project will be priced based on size, complexity, and materials used.
Generally, we ask for $25/hour plus the cost of materials.
The cost of stained glass is about $50/square foot. The cost of tile varies but is generally a good bit less than glass– around $5-10/square foot.
We will ask for a reasonable deposit once we’ve had an initial conversation, both to finance the cost of materials and to secure your commitment before beginning the project.
Some examples:
A 14”x22” wall-hanging piece made from stained glass has a bit of complexity and takes us 15 hours working on it together.
Materials cost about $100 and labor is 30 hours x $25/hr = $750
The total cost is $850.
You have a small side table on which you’d like a simple flower design with a solid background, made from tiles that we already have.
Materials cost about $15, and it takes one of us 10 hours to complete the whole project, so labor costs $250.
The total cost is $265.
We are willing to work with your budget to make your idea work! Get in touch and let’s figure it out together!
We are willing to ship mosaics to US customers -- cost varies widely depending on size and weight, please get in touch to inquire about shipping costs.
