About The Shop

Broken Dreams is the creative vision of jesse sugar moore and kristen dunn, and the collaborative product of many dozens of friends, makers, and contributors.

In 2021, we (jesse and kristen) started making broken tile mosaic art on tabletops (hence, broken dreams) after finding inspiration in a bathroom at the micro-club Bonobo in Tokyo in 2018. Around the same time, jesse, a lifelong record collector, had been buying record collections and other random treasures, with a distant vision that looked something like a shop. 

When finding a place to sell our art proved fruitless, we started to toss around the idea of opening a shop of our own. We hosted a popup shop in jesse’s living room during the 2021 holiday season to test it out. We offered space for some friends to sell their art things, too. If we opened our own shop, it would have to be done on a shoestring budget, and with a lot of collaboration. The idea to offer space for friends and community members to consign their art, creations, and other creatively-inspired items, felt obvious.

In March, the art gawds and gawdesses were looking upon us when Nucleus Art Gallery moved further down the street, to 30th Ave. We immediately jumped on the vacant space, signing ourselves up for the ongoing community art project that is broken dreams. 

After many trips to The Rebuilding Center and many evenings laboring away at an increasingly fancy collection of spreadsheets, we opened our doors to the public on May 15, 2022.

About The Artists Who Run It

Jesse and Kristen are many-faceted artists who have collaborated on many projects, including local events, multiple installations and camps at various festivals and Burning Man events, dozens and dozens of mosaic projects, and the ongoing art project that is this shop, Broken Dreams. 

Along with mosaic art, Jesse also DJs, plays instruments, upcycles clothing, and has made some really excellent windchimes. In a previous life he was a high school math teacher.

Along with mosaic art, Kristen also draws tattoos on people, practices ikebana, practices sashiko, and makes all manner of other visual art. In a previous life she was a pediatric ICU nurse. You can check out her tattoo website (and book an appointment!) at www.flowerthieftattoo.com
